Today I was at COSTCO and got stuck behind to people who were clustered around one of the sample stands.

First lady was hand feeding her three children (est. ages, 11, 10, and 9).  Second gentleman watched his two daughters strip the tray of salmon on rice crackers, three times.  I finally cleared my throat and made a shooing gesture and the gentleman cleared his daughters out of the aisle so people could pass.  The lady hand feeding her children was still feeding them as I went by.

The gentleman said, to my back, "You don't have to get mad, they are just children."

I decided just to keep going, but I wasn't angry at the children.

I am concerned about the children, as apparently they are not being fed enough to keep them from swarming the sample stands like locusts, hoping to find enough to eat to stay alive.

Did I do right?  Should I have said something?  Would it be best to just avoid stores when they have the sample stands out?

I had ANOTHER Doctor's appointment today, with my pulmonologist of all people, and we got into over whether or not to medicate my mild depression.  The more I think about our discussion the more pissed I get, so behind the cut is the rant, read on at your own risk.

Read more...Collapse )

If you've read this far, thanks.  I don't want advice just validation.

Rant for todayCollapse )

Well, as I said in my last post, my attention span has been suffering due to chemo, side effects and other things.  But I'm going to try to post more now.

For those who haven't heard, I've been cancer free for 3 months now.

So let's recap the time line:

April May 2009Collapse )Round OneCollapse )
Round twoCollapse )
Round threeCollapse )
Round fourCollapse )
Post ChemoCollapse )
I'm now back on the job market, although that does include a possible promotion here in El Paso.  My finances are in a shambles, but you know....I've beat cancer, I can beat anything.

Thanks to everyone who has given me so much support over the past 9 months.  I'll try to do better keeping everyone up to date.

On April 6 I had my annual physical, where my MD finally agreed that there was something wrong with my right testicle.  I've been saying this for two years, but now that it had grown to about 3x the size of the other one, he finally agreed.

April 13 I had an ultrasound, after telling me it would be at least a week before any results were in, they called me with referrals to a urologist and an Oncologist within 24 hours (April 14).  I saw the oncologist on the 16th, who got me fast tracked to the urologist on the 21st.

The urologist said, "Yep, it needs to come out, what are you doing tomorrow morning?"  Seeing as I needed to be functional for Dia de los Ninos/Dia de los Libros that weekend, we scheduled the surgery for Monday, April 27.  That gave time for my parents to come down and for me to take some time off work.  It also gave me time to clean my apartment (thanks Zada).

On the morning of the 27th I delivered a 90gram, seminoma tumor.  Which confirmed the diagnosis of testicular cancer.  Which has seriously screwed with my summer plans.  I got to wait around the hospital for about 5 hours until they could fit me in for a CT on my abdomen and chest to see if the cancer had metastasized.  While they only found one lymph node involved, it was 3.3cm, which made me  stage II.  The good news is that my liver and lungs are clear.  I didn't have my brain MRI until May 5th, so I don't know if my brain is involved yet or not, although they say that it is doubtful when the organs in between are clear.  Still, 95% of the people who get this type of cancer are between the ages of 15 and 39, so I"m not willing to take a chance.

I start 4 cycles of BEP chemotherapy on May 18th.  My cycle consists of five (5) days of chemo with 16 days of recovery, repeat 4 times.  By a happy coincidence, my summer trips, K'tai in June and ALA-Annual in July are all on weeks when I will not be getting chemo, and the Dr. (Vivanco) says I can go to them, as long as I feel up to it.   Pennsic is right after I finish the final cycle, so it is the diciest of the summer trips, but I'm planning on being there as a reward to myself for making it through chemo.

I'm also going to keep going to school through all this.  I am too close to this degree to stop now.

I'm going to survive this.  but one burning question comes to mind.

Do I need a different size cup since I only have one ball?

More later.

John/Omar

PS Guys, do regular testicular exams no matter how old you are, and if you find something odd, push your doctor until he explains it.  I wish I had.

The first five people to comment in this post get to request a sketch of a character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their drawing ability level. If you absolutely can't draw, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drabbles or icons or something instead.

Got home from Pennsic yesterday and jumped right back into work today.  I sometime think that it isn't worth taking vacations because of the amount of work that awaits you when you get back to your office.

For some reason I agreed to be part of the MDA Executive Lock-up this year.  I will get even with the person who gave then my name because he knows I'm a sucker for this sort of thing.  If anyone can help me raise my "bail" the website for donations is https://www.joinmda.org/2008teluep/jsand713

More on Pennisc when I finish digesting it.

Going to bed now.

The next few days I"ll be blogging for the Council meetings of the American Library Association.  Council is the 180+ group that represents the membership and actually runs the 60,000+ American Library Association.  OK I guess the Executive Board acutally run things but Council is the major policy setting group.

Council I Down and two to go.

This afternoon it looks like I'm moderating a panel discussion on "Out at Work: 20 years later" as the one participant back from 20 years ago.

More later.
